‘Milking it’, 2008
Performance
I will have a machine, this machine will be breastfeeding on me. It will have speakers that will be emitting sucking noises. I will walk around city centres stopping every 10 minutes to sit in public places and breast feed my machine for 5 minutes.
This work is about issues people have with breastfeeding in public places as well as a reaction to the fact that it is still illegal to breastfeed in public places in England but not in Scotland and most everywhere in Europe. I want to confront people with their own insecurities and preconceptions. My work is about rituals and the natural. I also often play with the notion of power, which the direct nature of performance allows. It is my belief that by confronting the public with situations they are uncomfortable or at least surprised by, will inspire conversation and hopefully further understanding on this topic. I will be touring this piece around Europe and in England until the end of 2008. So be on the lookout?
